A clinical study of fractures of the Os Calcis



Abstract
Recently the calcaneal fractures present us still considerable divergence of opinion as to the best treatment. A clinical analysis and the results of treatment were made on 33 cases of the calcaneal fractures treated at the department of orthopedic surgery, Seoul Red Cross Hospital from 1970 to April t 1974.
1. Among 33 feet of 25 patients, male and female ratio was 187
2. 16 patients out of 25 were in age group between 30 and 49 (64%)
3. 8 patients were bilateral and 8 cases in open fractures.
4. The causes of the injuries were falling accidents (15 patients, 60%), fall from standing or falling downstairs (3 patients, 12%), automobile accidents (5 patients, 20%) and etc.
5. Compression fracture of the spine was the most common associated injury.
6. According to Watson-Jones, fracture of the Os Calcis was classified into type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 11 cases belonged to type 5 and 10 cases belonged to type 1.
7. In treatment wre have used .widely differing methods including compression bandage and early weight bearing (12 cases, 36 %) , cast immobilisation (9 cases, 27 %) . below the knee cast incorporating the pin (7 cases, 21%) and etc, according to the type of fractures.
8. The results of treatment followed up were studied by the Unit System of Gartner and Hailaos. By it, the fractures which belonged to type 1, 2 an 3 brought ins good results and the result in type 5 was better than in type 4.
